Sample Projects

Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Cambridge, MA - Providing ongoing Civil Engineering services including utility and stormwater management design for this $500 Million development. Sherwood CD is working with Kleinfelder | SEA Consultants on this design to support up to seven new buildings consisting of biotechnology laboratories, office, retail, and residential space as well as extensive utility infrastructure upgrades. Some key features include roof-top detention (blue roofs), combined infiltration & planting soil aeration systems, and reduction of total phosphorus in stormwater for compliance with Lower Charles River Basin TMDL requirements.

MIT West Campus Gateway, Cambridge, MA - Provided Consulting Arborist services to MILA Landscape Architects related to renovation of the west campus gateway directly opposite MIT's grand entrance at 77 Massachusetts Avenue. Per Sherwood CD's recommendation, extensive concrete seating walls were supported on drilled helical piles instead of traditional shallow footings. This approach eliminated the need for open-cut excavation for footing construction, so that the project had only minimal root-zone impact on adjacent mature oak trees. Other services included condition assessment of existing trees in the project vicinity, and suggested design modifications to allow for future tree growth.

MIT UIC Registration, Cambridge, MA - Retained by MIT's Environmental Health & Safety office to prepare Underground Injection Control (UIC) Well registration application packages for compliance with U.S.E.P.A. regulations. This project involved researching as-built record drawings and field inspections to verify the existence and condition of dozens of potential infiltration wells on campus.

207 South Street, Boston - Utility service upgrades for 6-story downtown office building, including reconfiguration of fire protection assembly

MIT Building 38 Service Drive, Cambridge, MA - Reconstruction of a service drive and surrounding landscape with stormwater upgrades. This project included redesign of a Liquid Oxygen and Nitrogen truck loading facility with extensive NFPA safety requirements. Construction needed to be sequenced such that gas deliveries were never interrupted since several laboratories relied on continuous supply of gases.

United Nations, New York, NY - Completed a year-long planning study with conceptual designs to support UN Campus renovations (scheduled completion in 2013), working with Hampshire Partnership

Private Residence, Wellesley Hills, MA - Design of 16 Ft. deep subsurface perimeter drain to address basement flooding, as well as site stormwater design and tree-related consulting to support $500k+ landscape upgrades by Kennen Landscape Architecture. This project included a 7,000 gallon tank for collecting roof runoff and groundwater to be reused for plant irrigation.

Dutton Pond Dam, Leicester, MA - Hydrologic & Hydraulic Study, dam break analysis, hazard classification change (approved)

Clark University, Worcester, MA - Prepared a comprehensive tree inventory & database of over 400 significant trees on campus to be used for ongoing tree care management. The database was populated with data including species, caliber (CBR), height, condition, apparent disease, insect problems, mechanical deficiencies, and recommendations. The work also included planning for future upgrades including a recommended species list to balance diversification goals and other guidelines to optimize the University's long-term investment in trees

Brookline Reservoir Dam, Brookline, MA - Hydrologic & Hydraulic Study, dam break analysis, Phase I inspection report, and Emergency Action Plan for a Class I High Hazard Potential dam

MIT Vassar Streetscape, Cambridge, MA - Construction administration services for utilities (electric & telecom ductbanks, sewer, fire protection, and domestic water) to support a $14M streetscape design & reconstruction led by Carol R. Johnson Assoc. Services included long-term weekly construction meetings, shop drawing approvals, RFI responses, and new design as well as numerous design changes in the field.

City of Everett, MA - Hydraulic modeling for NPDES Phase II MS4 discharge permit compliance

1365 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA - Plumbing upgrades and sewage ejector design to address sewer backups from public system into commercial office space, required public hearing before Mass. Plumbing Board for code waiver

Bentley College, Waltham, MA - Lower campus stormwater design to support landscape design by Stephen Stimson Assoc.

City of Cambridge, MA - Technical hydraulic model review of draft FEMA Flood Insurance Study

NSTAR Gas, Dedham, MA - Design of subsurface stormwater infiltration system for field operations yard

University of Massachusetts, Amherst Campus - Stormwater management design for southwest residential corridor to support landscape design by Stephen Stimson Assoc.

Town of Swampscott, MA - provide alternative approaches to eliminate street flooding at Palmer Pond with coastal outfall (project is ongoing)

Private Massachusetts residences in Belmont, Brookline, Cambridge, Chestnut Hill, Lexington, Mashpee, Natick, and Wellesley Hills - Engineering services related to site design (new construction and existing), retaining walls, basement flooding, flooding on property, planting plans, etc.

Framingham Water Treatment Plant - Provided comprehensive stormwater management design services for new facility site, approved by Town. Project is on hold because of funding.
